Dubai’s winter is the season everyone waits for. The heat breaks, windows open, and evenings move outdoors. But your family isn’t the only one changing habits.
As temperatures drop, many pests move indoors looking for warmth, water and food. Kitchens, bathrooms, store rooms and wall gaps become their winter homes. Catching them early is far cheaper and easier than dealing with a full infestation in spring.
Here’s what to watch for in your apartment or villa this winter, and how to keep pests out.
The 4 most common winter pests in Dubai homes
1. Cockroaches
Cockroaches are the most common household pest in Dubai, and cooler nights push them indoors in search of warmth and food. German cockroaches settle in kitchens and bathrooms. Larger American cockroaches come up through drains, basements and parking areas.
They carry germs that can cause stomach infections and can trigger asthma and allergies. If you see one in daylight, there are likely many more hiding. Our general pest control service targets them at the source.
2. Rats and mice
Rodents look for warm, sheltered spots as the weather cools. Villas with gardens, store rooms and false ceilings are favourite targets. Rodents chew wiring, contaminate food and can spread diseases such as leptospirosis. Read more about professional rodent control.
3. Mosquitoes after rain
Many people think of mosquitoes as a summer problem. In Dubai, winter rain leaves puddles, blocked drains and water in plant pots, and mosquito numbers can jump within days. Unscreened doors and windows let them straight in. Our fogging service helps bring outdoor mosquito numbers down fast.
4. Ants
Ants keep marching all year. In villas with gardens, they follow food trails from the landscaping into kitchens. A few ants on the counter usually means a nest close by.
Warning signs to check this week
Walk through your home with this quick checklist:
- Small dark droppings in kitchen cabinets, under the sink or behind the fridge
- A musty, oily smell in cupboards (a sign of cockroaches)
- Scratching sounds in the ceiling or walls at night
- Gnawed food packets, cables or wooden edges
- Trails of ants along skirting boards or window frames
- Standing water on balconies, in plant saucers or AC drip trays
- Cockroaches seen during the day
How to keep pests out this winter
For apartments
- Store food, rice and pet food in airtight containers.
- Take rubbish out every night, especially in buildings with shared chutes.
- Fix dripping taps and leaking pipes under sinks. Pests need water more than food.
- Seal gaps around pipes, cables and kitchen cabinets with silicone.
- Clear out cardboard boxes and old newspapers. Cockroaches feed on and hide in them.
For villas
- Empty water from plant pots, buckets and garden toys after rain.
- Keep drains and gully traps clean and covered.
- Trim plants and shrubs away from walls and windows.
- Check store rooms, garages and the space above false ceilings for droppings.
- Fit screens on doors and windows you keep open in the cool evenings.
Prevention cuts the risk, but it can’t reach pests already nesting inside walls, drains or ceilings. That’s where a professional treatment helps.
Why you should only hire an approved pest control company
It’s tempting to buy a spray from a shop or a cheap “chemical” from someone selling door to door. In the UAE, that can be dangerous. Dubai Municipality has warned residents not to carry out pest control themselves or use chemicals sold by individuals, and asks the public to report anyone selling aluminium phosphide, the illegal fumigant known as “bomb”, on 800900 (Khaleej Times).
In Dubai, every pest control company must hold a No Objection Certificate from the Dubai Municipality Public Health Pest Control Section, and its technicians must carry a pest control ID card issued by that section. The Municipality inspects these companies and fined 28 of them in 2025 for not meeting its standards (Gulf Today).
Before you book anyone, ask to see their approval and the technician’s ID card. A legitimate company will be happy to show you.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I get pest control in Dubai?
For most homes, a professional treatment twice a year is a good baseline. Villas with gardens, ground-floor flats and homes with a past infestation may need it more often.
Is pest control safe for children and pets?
Approved companies must use pesticides that meet Dubai Municipality specifications. Your technician will tell you how long to keep children and pets out of treated rooms.
Do I need to leave my home during treatment?
For general cockroach or ant treatment, usually only for a few hours. Fumigation and some bed bug treatments need longer. Ask when you book.
Why do cockroaches come back after I spray?
Shop sprays kill the cockroaches you see, not the eggs and nests inside walls and drains. Professional gel baits and targeted treatments reach the source.
Do you treat villas and offices as well as apartments?
Yes. Al Banan treats apartments, villas, offices and commercial premises across Dubai and Sharjah.
